Vintage Champleve Enamel Carved and Painted Bone Chinoiserie Box
Beautiful vintage box probably made to hold cigarettes but it will hold small treasures just as well. The lid and sides are enamel on flower patterned Copper. Enamel is the most beautiful vivid shade of Royal Blue.
Held by prongs on the lid is a scene of two scholars, seated at a table with accessories, being served dinner by a woman in traditional clothing. Very nicely done carving, it is done in bone and sectional. The three sections are then assembled as a small puzzle. It is also hand colored as in traditional Japanese carved Ivory. My feeling is that this is a piece from China and not Japan, hence the use of bone and not Ivory. Beautiful object, regardless.
Dating from the first half of the 20th Century it is in very good condition with some small hard to see issues. There is a bit of loss of the gold plating done to the base of the box. The inside is also gold plated. There is an area on the lower right corner, upright edge of the box where the enamel is lost. Same applies to the upper left corner. It happened a long time ago, patina has taken over and it is not too obvious. Please make sure to enlarge the images to see it in detail. Images are highly magnified.
Unmarked, a beautiful accessory for your home or office.
