Gorham Sterling Brilliant Cut Glass Victorian Powder Jar
Gorgeous antique Victorian cut glass powder or rouge
jar with finely engraved Sterling Silver lid signed by Gorham of Rhode
Island. The particular mark dates from 1874. An exquisite piece of late
1800's American craftsmanship.
It measures
approximately 2" tall and has a base diameter of 2' at the widest
point. The lid is beautifully hand engraved with a garland of ribbons
and Orchids or more likely daffodils. It is monogrammed with a letter B
and perhaps F or I in elaborate script.
It is fully hallmarked. Marks are as follows: "Lion Passant", which
faces right; the anchor and the letter which is a "G" in Gothic
Style. My research indicated that this particular form of the "G" mark
dates it to 1874. These marks are in individual cartouches or turtle
marks followed by the word "Sterling" and the letter/number combination
"D1453".
It is in
remarkable condition, no damage to the cut leaded glass base or
Sterling lid, but there is one 1/8" scratch on the base that can only
be seen when the piece is upside down.
We are happy to bring it to a high polish at your request. We keep some of the found patina as some collectors prefer that.
The pattern on the bottom of the base is a star burst. If you would
