Vintage Exquisite Japan Damascene Zougan Cufflinks Finely Detailed
Outstanding vintage Japanese Zougan or Damascene cuff links with
amazing detail. The front portion features a landscape with Mount Fuji
at the background, finely detailed building and trees. The perspective
is also excellent giving life to the landscape. The other side of the
cufflink is narrower and depicts a tall bamboo stalk, other vegetation
and leaves.
This very fine Zougan technique was used for the
Japanese swords and other items for the feared Ninjas of Feudal Japan.
When they were outlawed at around the turn of the century (1900s) these
very skilled artisans turned their efforts to other types of objects.
This pair of cufflinks is a good example of their excellent workmanship.
Generally speaking the metals used are 22k Gold for the gold
inset portions, Sterling or Fine Silver for the silver inset portions.
These are fused onto a background of blackened steel. The cabochons are
then set, in this case they are set into gold plated brass.
Measurements are:
Large oval front: a bit over 11/16" by 1/2" at the widest point.
Smaller oval: 5/8" tall by 5/16" at the widest point.
Cufflinks are unmarked, in excellent vintage condition (they can be polished further) and estimated to date from the 1920s.
