Vintage Sterling Gate Bracelet with 14k Gold Heart Padlock Clasp & Key
Vintage heart padlock gate bracelet likely to have been made in Birmingham, England. Very unusual combination of Sterling chain and solid 14k Gold heart padlock clasp and key. It was designed as such, made by the same company. Both bracelet and clasp have the same maker's marks. It is a beautiful version of the traditional Victorian style, updated.
It measures 3/8" at the widest point of the gate style chain. It fits a wrist up to 6 3/4". The padlock itself measures about 11/16" tall by a bit over 7/16" at the widest point and 3/32" thick. It is beautifully made with scrolls and textured edge, resembles a real padlock with the proper fitting for the key. The key is not needed for opening/closing.
The key is 11/16" approximately and is securely attached to the padlock.
Bracelet is in excellent vintage condition, the heart padlock clasp works well, opens with ease and stays closed well too. There is a safety chain that insures it stays on your wrist.
The marks on the back of the padlock are "C C" inside two square cartouches for the maker (not identified), the number 585 inside an old fashioned scale and the number 585 by itself on another cartouche. It is the European equivalent of 14k. The last mark is an anchor, the symbol used to determine the origin as Birmingham.
The marks on the bracelet are located on the jump ring for the clasp. They are too small for a proper photograph. They are identical to the padlock but read 925 instead of 585.
It is estimated that the bracelet dates from the 1970s, perhaps the 1980s.
